Week Ending 12.12.14

This week we have been performing the nativity for real audiences and I'm sure you'll agree the children did an absolutely fantastic job. They have all worked really hard and throughout the week the performances went from strength to strength.
In maths we have continued to work on addition and the children have been adding more than one. We showed them how to write number sentences and they continued to use numberlines and objects to help with this.
In English we have listened to winter themed stories and retold them orally to build up the language of storytelling. We have also been focussing on which way to read a story and answering questions to check understanding of the text. the children have also been predicting what might happen next.
The children have continued with squiggle and batty (phonics).

Week Ending 5.12.14

This week we have mainly been practising hard for the upcoming performances of the nativity show. The children are doing brilliantly. The singing is fantastic and the children with lines have worked really hard on learning them. We think you'll be impressed!
We have done work on adding one and counting forwards. The children learnt what the addition and equals sign means and we used objects and numberlines to help. We have also been practising number formation of 1, 2, 3 - three is proving quite troublesome!
We have been continuing to trace our names and learn our sounds - the sounds we have done are a, qu, d, qu, p and b.

Week ending 28.11.14

This week we listened to a story about a class play. The children practised retelling the story in the correct order orally. We have started our phonics program called Batty Basics. The children have learnt 5 sounds this week. They hear a story which has lots of words in it starting with that days letter and there is an action to go with each sound. The children also learn how to write the letter using the correct formation which they are getting on well with. This week we have learnt i, l, c, o and t. The children all got a copy of the stories and actions in their book bags so they can continue to practise at home. If you want to ask the children to think of words that start with that particular sound or go for a hunt in books to try and spot the sounds.
In maths we have been continuing to count and look at the order of numbers.
We have started the rehearsals for the nativity show and the children who have got speaking roles will have brought home words on cards to practise. It's gradually coming together!

Week ending 21.11.14

This week in English we listened to the Christmas story in preparation for starting the nativity play rehearsals. We retold the story orally and thought about the sequence of the story. We have continued to work on rhyming, thinking really carefully about words that rhyme with each other and also making up rhyming words. We also started to think about the initial sounds of words and the children have been working on finding words that begin with the same sound.
In maths we have been looking at 2D and 3D shapes, the children have investigated the properties of shapes, talking about sides, vertices, edges, corners, faces and whether the edges or sides are straight or curved. The children have made models, pictures and patterns using different shapes.
We have continued to practise the nativity songs and the children seem to be getting on well with this!

Week ending 14.11.14

This week we have been artists. We have looked at self portraits. The children looked carefully at their features. They worked with a friend to see what was the same and what was different about their faces. We have worked on painting and drawing skills. The children chalked the outline of their faces and the details on their face. They chose the colours they though were most similar to their features and painted these on. The children's self portraits will be displayed in class and when they are ready you are more than welcome to pop into the class to see them.
We have been continuing with squiggle to develop letter formation skills. We have also been developing listening, concentration and rhyming skills.
In maths we have been working in number recognition. We have looked at the numbers 1 - 10. The children have been using these to label sets of objects. They have also been counting out the correct amounts to put on matching number cards.
We have also started learning the songs for our nativity play.

Week ending 7.11.14
What have we been doing in English? Last week we listened to a firework story and discussed Bonfire night . We created our own firework picture outside by using powder paint. Then we thought of descriptive words to describe the painting. We have started squiggle to help develop writing letter patterns and we have been playing some listening games to prepare for phonics. We have also been assessing which sounds the children know.
What have we been doing in Maths? We have been working on number. We have been practising counting objects by lining them up so we can be accurate. We have also been doing lots of counting out loud, counting beats on a drum, jumps and objects.
